Back in NYC as we start the new year…

I’m back in the Big Apple with some exciting performances to kick off 2012.  Check out my latest newsletter here and my calendar of upcoming events here.  I’m especially thrilled about my first project of the year: a reprise of Georges Aperghis’ Sextuor: L’origine des Espèces on February 2nd, 3rd, and 4th in Manhattan.  To help us with our fundraising campaign for the show, please click here.  Your contributions are much needed and appreciated!

“Christie Finn: Beyond NYC”

My time as the trainee with VocaalLAB is rapidly coming to a close, and I am pleased to invite you to a performance that I will give next Tuesday, December 13, 2011 at 12.30.  I’ll perform poetry (my own and the poetry of others), works for solo voice, and also some songs with my extraordinary pianist friend Andrew Wright.  My colleagues at VocaalLAB have dubbed the performance “Christie Finn: Beyond NYC,” but my time here has taken me further than just “beyond NYC.”  My ideas about movement, acting, and expression, as well as my conception of the responsibilities of the contemporary singer, have developed more fully.  I hope that my performance next week will be “beyond expectations.”  My title for the performance is “We, the Hearts.”

Concerts with VocaalLAB

My time with VocaalLAB has been fantastic so far! What an incredible group of musicians. I had the chance to sing with VocaalLAB last night in the Gaudeamus Festival (Utrecht, The Netherlands) and will perform with them again this coming Saturday at Orgelpark Amsterdam.  For more information, please visit the “Calendar” and “Recent” pages of my website.

Fall 2011 in Amsterdam

Hello, dear visitor…
After a whirlwind trip to Amsterdam last April, coupled with lots of paperwork, waiting, more paperwork (did I mention that the paperwork is still going on?), I will be joining the Netherlands-based group
VocaalLAB starting in August as a trainee as well as the understudy for their production MonteverdISH.  Thanks to the hard work in the office of VocaalLAB, I’ve won the Charlotte Köhler Prijzen 2011 from the Prins Bernhard Cultuurfonds to help fund my travel and study.  I could not be more thrilled about this opportunity, and I am grateful as always to everyone who has supported me and continues to support me in my career.  I will return to New York right before Christmas in December.

New York Times Review

New York Times Tactus Review, March 23, 2011:

“In her alluring Quartet No. 2 (1964) Betsy Jolas replaced the first-violin part with a wordless soprano line. Ms. Jolas intended the singer to be part of the quartet texture, not a soloist. But given the increasing athleticism of Ms. Jolas’s vocal writing, with its slides, scat figures and subtle color shifts, it is nearly impossible for a soprano not to hold the spotlight. Christie Finn began self-effacingly, but quickly surrendered to the music’s florid impulses. That was probably for the best: she gave a lovely account of this complicated score.”

WELCOME!
